‘To read is an act of vision in time. Moving between chapters, we encounter a sense of time and space, an intersection where our lived narratives are eclipsed by the speculative and realized lives of others. Over and above the temporality of narrative, time is present in text itself, in the book as an object. The book, then, is a time machine—not in what we read, but in how.’</sup>
